The Interview
Tobias, welcome to Tulpa Creatives! How would you describe your journey so far in the film and TV industry?
Thank you! So far I would describe it as fun, frustrating and educational. In equal measures.
What drew you to Tulpa Creatives?
I was drawn to Tulpa’s outside-the-box thinking when it comes to financing, their passion for genre, and their overall nerdiness.
In 2–3 sentences who are you?
I’m a community-loving, creative nerd with a punk rock attitude towards the status quo and traditions. As well as a bad-dad-joking father of two, and history aficionado. I’m also kind of an average angler.
What motivates you and why do you work creatively?
I wonder if I ever really had a choice when it came to what field I would end up in. I am someone who is very much driven by what I find fun and exciting, and in combination with my affinity for working in a team, it lends itself very well towards working creatively. A passion for telling stories helps too, I guess.

Which filmmakers have influenced you the most?
As someone who was a kid in the 80s and 90s I would be lying if I didn’t at least mention Steven Spielberg. Later influences include Satoshi Kon, Robert Eggers, Werner Herzog, Darren Aronofsky, Thelma Schoonmaker, and many more.
If you got the opportunity to remake a movie or TV series, which one would you go for?
There was a rather bad series in the mid 90s called Kindred: The Embraced. It was based on a roleplaying game I play, and I would love to do that one over. Better this time. Without Aaron Spelling trying to make it into Beverly Hills 90210 with vampires.
Mention one thing you think would make the film/TV/gaming industry better
Just one? Then it’ll have to be strong unions! The film sector is underfinanced and overworked, and we’re losing experienced personnel at an alarming rate because the conditions are such that a lot of people eventually give up and go do something else. We need to fight that, rather than relying on a surplus of film and media schools flooding the market with new cheap labour, who in five to ten years’ time will leave as well, for the same reason. The loss of knowledge, legacy and community is going to make it harder for Swedish film and TV to be taken seriously in the future.
